When Sir Jim Ratcliffe decided to build a modern replacement for his beloved Land Rover Defender, he understood that off-road capability wasn't enough for the new vehicle to succeed. Vehicles like the Defender didn't just build their reputation on extreme performance in tough terrain; they were made famous for their legendary durability and reliability. When you're adventuring in the Serengeti or exploring the Outback, you can't count on a fully-stocked INEOS dealer to take care of your Grenadier like you can when you're commuting to work here in Charleston. That is why INEOS has left no stone unturned in imbuing unmatched reliability and long-term durability in every aspect of the Grenadier to go along with its incredible performance, unmistakable style, and convenient features.

Starting With a Rock-Solid Foundation

To build a rugged SUV that's ready for anything, you have to start from the ground up. And that's exactly what INEOS did with the Grenadier. At the heart of this vehicle lies a fully boxed ladder-frame chassis, akin to what you would find in a full-size pickup truck. This provides the rigidity needed to fearlessly tackle the most inhospitable terrain. However, INEOS also designed this frame with an eye towards long-term durability, sealing it with a special triple-layer protective coating designed to shield against corrosion.

This protective coating starts with a traditional E-Coat, a process that uses electrical currents to evenly deposit a layer of paint over complex shapes. This is then followed by a thicker powder coating on the exterior of the frame for enhanced durability. Finally, INEOS finishes the frame with a hot wax coating that sheds water, keeping it rust-free for the long term, no matter where your adventures take you. It is this attention to detail that allows the brand to confidently provide a 12-year anti-perforation corrosion warrant on the Grenadier.

Sitting atop this durable chassis is a rugged body made from galvanized steel with some aluminum components. These corrosion-resistant materials help the Grenadier last a long time, even when your adventures don't provide you with the time or resources to give it a thorough cleaning. As expected of an off-road machine, the Grenadier is offered with powder-coated Underride Protection and Rock Sliders to shield the belly of the vehicle. However, INEOS has gone even further, with innovative additions like Side Bump Strips and plastic Roof Protection Strips to help protect the paint from getting scratched as you drive through brush or load items on the roof rack.

A Star-Studded Cast

The powertrain and suspension components that are attached to the chassis are just as durable. In fact, reading the list of parts suppliers that INEOS turned to for the Grenadier reveals a star-studded cast of who's who in the automobile industry. This starts with the B58 turbocharged inline-six engine sourced from BMW. Introduced in 2015, this is widely considered to be one of the best engines that BMW has ever produced and is known for its impressive durability. In fact, the closed-deck crankcase is shared with the B57 turbo-diesel, meaning it is significantly overbuilt for a gasoline engine. This reliability permits a one-year / 12,000-mile service interval so you can head out for adventure without worrying about constant stops for scheduled maintenance.

This capable engine is paired with the 8HP eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF Friedrichshafen, which is arguably the best automatic transmission on the market and has been used by Land Rover, Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, Porsche, Bentley, and countless other brands. Power then goes to a TREMEC full-time two-speed transfer case with an external oil cooler to keep temperatures down during hard use before being routed to the wheels through Eaton locking differentials and CV shafts from Dana Spicer. Every one of these brands is prized for producing high-end parts that stand up to the test of time, giving the Grenadier a pedigree that few other vehicles can match.

A quick look at the suspension and brakes shows similar high-quality components from industry-leading brands. The suspension in the Grenadier is a master class in design, combining traditional solid beam axles with a modern five-link layout and coil springs, perfectly balancing performance, durability, and comfort. The axles themselves were developed for the Grenadier by Carraro, a brand more commonly found producing parts for heavy-duty industrial and agricultural equipment than luxury SUVs, while the springs were sourced from Eibach and the dampers from ZF. For brakes, there was only one choice—the legendary Brembo.

An Adventure-Ready Interior

Unlike competing off-road luxury SUVs, the INEOS Grenadier is rugged and durable on the inside as well as the outside. In fact, the entire cabin is IP54K water resistant, including the infotainment stack and other electronics. When combined with five drain valves concealed under the cabin floor mats, this means you can simply hose out your SUV after a particularly muddy adventure. With the Underseat Dry Stowage, you don't even have to worry about taking your electronic devices and other water-sensitive items out before getting the interior wet.

A great deal of thought has also been put into making sure that every part of the interior can be comfortably operated in extreme conditions. The touchscreen controls that other brands rely on for basic cabin functions like activating the heated seats or turning up the AC can be difficult to operate at the best of times—and virtually impossible when you are wearing heavy gloves or have mud on your hands. That's why INEOS made sure to make all the important controls tactile and easy-to-reach hard buttons and added a central rotary control knob to access functions on the infotainment screen. This is one luxury SUV that is built to get dirty and will keep going strong no matter the conditions.

Tested to Perfection

While high-quality components and thoughtful design are important, any engineer knows that the real trick is making sure that everything works together as desired in the real world. That is why INEOS committed to an extensive test regime that took 130 Grenadier prototypes around the world before the production vehicle hit the market. By the time testing was complete, the prototypes had traveled over 1.1 million miles across 15 countries, ranging from the deserts of Morocco to the Arctic regions of Sweden. This global trek even included thousands of miles of testing here in the United States, proving the Grenadier can handle any destination that you have in mind.

INEOS didn't complete the testing entirely in-house—it gave Grenadier prototypes to organizations around the world that do their work in the toughest of environments and challenged them to do their worst. From joining the HALO Trust clearing minefields in Kosovo to working the K+S potassium chloride mine in Zilitz, the Grenadier has proven itself in extreme conditions. The testing also wasn't restricted to driving dynamics and durability; it included making sure the Grenadier could be serviced in the field with limited resources, ensuring that you can count on your vehicle to get you home, even when your adventures don't go according to plan.

An Unbeatable Off-Road Machine

There are a lot of luxury SUV options available on the market these days, but there is nothing that can match the rugged design of the Grenadier. Even legendary models from other brands lack many of the features that INEOS made sure to include in its vehicles. The Grenadier is designed for those who do more and go further and need a vehicle that can keep up when the going gets tough. From the solid frame and durable body to the incredible powertrain and rugged interior, every aspect of this model assures drivers that it is ready for anything and is built for the long run.
